Franquia Byers Mealing, B.S, M. Ed.
Founder of First Class Academy and Lead Instructor
Greetings! I am Franquia Byers Mealing, a dedicated educator and proud South Carolinian with a rich background in academics, sports, and community service. Born and raised in South Carolina, I am the eldest daughter of Dr. James and Mrs. Ruby Byers and sister to Raven Byers Fox.
Educational Journey:
My educational journey spans across various counties in South Carolina, including Cherokee, Spartanburg District 6, Greenville, and York. During my time in grade school, I actively participated in leadership roles such as Student Body Secretary, Student Body President, and Beta Club President. I showcased my passion for both academics and sports, being a part of the school band's percussion section, as well as contributing to the basketball, volleyball, and tennis teams. Graduating in the top ten of my class, I was honored for my 12 years of perfect attendance, earning recognition on the news.
Higher Education Achievements:
I continued my academic pursuits at the University of South Carolina Upstate, where I served as an orientation leader, member of the TEACh organization, South Carolina Teaching Fellows, and student ambassador. I was listed on both the Dean’s and Chancellor’s list multiple times. I graduated with honors and made history as one of the first second-generation college students to graduate from the university. My commitment to education led me to Northcentral University, where I earned my Master's degree in education with honors. I am currently a Doctoral Candidate and I am on my way to earning a Doctoral Degree in Organizational Leadership.
Teaching and Coaching Experience:
For the past six years, I have had the privilege of teaching in South Carolina public schools, engaging with students at the elementary, secondary, and collegiate levels. In addition to teaching, I've coached step teams and basketball teams, fostering not only academic but also athletic and artistic development in my students. Currently, I serve as an Admissions Coordinator at a Community College.
Community Involvement:
Beyond the classroom, I am an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., where I take pride in contributing to the betterment of society and being of service to all mankind.

Dr. James Byers, a Brooklyn, NY, native, is a distinguished math educator with 31 years of experience inspiring and empowering students to excel in mathematics. Renowned for his exceptional teaching methods, Dr. Byers has consistently achieved outstanding results, with his students excelling in state exams and the Algebra I end-of-course tests. His dedication to fostering a deep understanding and appreciation of mathematics in his students has made him a revered figure in the educational community.
Dr. Byers is married to Ruby Lee Byers, a National Board Certified School Counselor, whose expertise and support have been invaluable to his teaching career. Together, they have nurtured a family deeply rooted in education. Their daughters, Franquia Byers Mealing and Raven Byers Fox, have followed in their father’s footsteps, becoming certified math teachers and continuing the family legacy of academic excellence.
